An interview with Dutch singer songwriter Elle, she tells a little bit about her future plans and the collaboration with iET. They wrote a song together called “Dreaming”. Sooooo!! This is the first clip I edited from all the material that was mostly (and beautifully) filmed by Etienne Manuhuwa (thank you so much!) during the first edition of the Kitchen Concerts! I wanted to give you a glimpse of what the evening has been like. Some of the vibe and short impressions of the duets I performed together with Janne Schra, Elle, Mary Davis Jr and Shirma Rouse! And of course there is a lot more to come :) In the upcoming weeks I will release a music video every week from one of the guest artists including the interviews we had with all of them. And also some of the other songs that were performed during the evening! So for now enjoy and as soon as there is any new material I will post it on my website. Love - iET

Music is ♥ presents the Kitchen Concerts!
So we are incredible proud to present the 1st Kitchen Concert on May 21st!
iET is organizing a series of 3 Kitchen Concerts to promote the collaborations with other great singer songwriters for her album the Kitchen Recordings Series 2! Each concert will be held in iET’s own home and each edition will feature a few of the artists from the album.
This 1st edition will be with: Janne Schra (Room Eleven), Elle, Shirma Rouse, Mary Davis Jr
Not only will there be a small audience to witness this special occasion but all the concerts will be filmed and recorded so we can share the live performances with all of you guys! And finally after the last concert in September there will be a release evening planned in BIRD, Rotterdam with hopefully all of the artists!
For now we will leave you with this teaser that iET created. The song is called “Dreaming” and was written together with Elle!

Cover albums zijn altijd hele uitdagingen. Want wanneer zijn covers eigenlijk goed? Als ze tot in de puntjes perfect worden nagespeeld? Of als de artiest de originele liedjes een eigen draai geeft? Aretha Franklin was het voorbeeld van een zangeres die met regelmaat liedjes opnam van anderen en deze zodanig naar hand zette, dat de originelen vaak een nieuwe dimensie kregen. Een aantal van die liedjes nam de Nederlandse soul zangeres Shirma Rouse onder handen voor haar tweede album ‘Shirma Sings Aretha’, waarop zij de Amerikaanse soul koningin eert.

De gemiddelde radio 3FM of 538 luisteraar zegt de naam Shirma Rouse wellicht niet meteen iets, aanbidders van Radio 6 of Arrow Jazz daarentegen, tonen mogelijk een brede glimlach. Toch is Rouse geen onbekende. Sterker nog: het kan zomaar zijn, dat je haar live aan het werk hebt gezien. Misschien heb je zelfs een cd in je bezit, waarop de Rotterdamse zangeres meedoet. Shirma Rouse is namelijk al tien jaar een van de meest gevraagde achtergrondzangeressen van Nederland. Ze stond met vele groten uit de nationale en internationale muziekindustrie in de studio en op het podium. Rouse zong jaren in de band van Anouk en werkte samen met artiesten als Wouter Hamel, Alain Clark, Marco Borsato, Tasha’s World, maar ook met internationale coryfeeën als Chaka Khan en Michael Bolton. In 2010 bracht Rouse haar dampende debuut ‘Chocolate Coated Dreams’ uit.
In hetzelfde jaar dat haar debuut uitkwam, ontstond het idee voor een album met songs van Aretha Franklin. Rouse kreeg toen een dvd van de artistiek leider van het Metropole Orkest, met daarop een registratie van het Nederlandse concert van de soulkoningin in 1968. De zangeres was zo onder de indruk, dat ze besloot in het werk van Franklin te duiken voor een cd-project.
Diversiteit
Het resultaat mag er wezen. Voor haar cd ‘Shirma Sings Aretha’ selecteerde Rouse dertien liedjes uit de periode 1960 tot en met 1972. Ze koos niet alleen voor een aantal geijkte hits, maar ook voor minder bekende songs. Daarmee laat de zangeres de diversiteit van Franklin horen. Zo wordt de heerlijk groovende hit ‘Think’ opgevolgd door een zwoel, bluesy ‘Won’t Be Long’, waarin de blazers prominenter aanwezig zijn dat in het origineel, en staat de klassieker ‘Chain of Fools’ naast het lieve ‘Love Is The Only Thing’, dat Rouse samen zingt met de Rotterdamse singer/songwriter iET.
Net als Franklin, heeft Rouse een stevige kerkroots. De gospelinvloeden zijn duidelijk hoorbaar in haar zangbenadering. Het is in dat opzicht ook niet vreemd dat ze ‘Amazing Grace’ uit het repertoire pikt, om het album mee te openen. Rouse’s stem is lichter dan die van Franklin, maar ze haalt net zo ferm uit als de Amerikaanse zangeres. Shirma zingt uit de toppen van haar tenen en stopt haar hele ziel en zaligheid in de liedjes.
Eigen draai
Met haar bezielende voordrachten covert Rouse niet even lukraak een aantal songs van Franklin: ze maakt zich de nummers eigen, zonder de originele versies pijn te doen. De nummers krijgen een hedendaagse opgefriste sound mee, met subtiel aangepaste arrangementen. Leuk is ook om het populaire vocale krachtpatserstrio Adlicious tegen te komen in ‘(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman’ en ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’. De songs krijgen daardoor dat stukje extra cachet. Het gebruik van strijkersquartet The Magic Strings in de helft van de nummers, doet eveneens veel goeds. Tel daarbij op Rouse’s stomende band en de organische productie van Budy Mokoginta (Secret Rendezvous en iET), en deze cd is af.
Shirma Rouse is een zangeres van topniveau die de erkenning verdient van een groter publiek. Ze is in staat om alle registers open te trekken en je recht in het hart te raken met haar gedreven performances. Rouse klinkt puur en passievol. Veel bekende artiesten en muziekinsiders hebben dit grote zangtalent al langer in de gaten. Nu is het nog aan het grote publiek om dat in het snotje te krijgen. Dit album helpt een stevige hand op weg. Respect!
